What is Plagiocephaly
Most infant's heads are misshapen (asymmetrical) by the birthing process and normocephaly is reached within four to eight weeks of life. Cranial asymmetry : unilateral or bilateral occipital flattening, occipitoparietal deformation, advancement of the ipsolateral ear and or frontal region is designated the term plagiocephaly.
Plagios and kephale are Greek words for oblique (slanting) and for head. When viewed from the vertex (above) the baby's head has a rhomboid or parallelogram shape.
This shape can be produced late in uterine life by one or more factors. Nonsyndromic head deformity may be associated with : a restrictive intrauterine environment, prematurity, lack of bone mineralization, compressional forces by the lumbosacral spine or ribs (breech), oligohydramnios, twins, triplets, congenital muscular torticollis (CMT), and supine (back) sleeping. The traditional treatment for significant cranial asymmetry was surgery of the cranial vault or plain nonintervention. Far less intrusive interventions are now possible with the advent of cranial orthotic treatment.
